A record number of show cars and drag racers streamed through the gates of the Pomona Fairplex for the Southern California debut of the '02 Super Chevy Show Season. We kicked off the 30th Anniversary of SUPER CHEVY magazine with special awards and merchandise and welcomed the new Super Chevy Show sponsor, Kidfuel, to the exciting world of motorsports. Speaking of kids (as in Kidfuel), we also introduced our "Under 21" award in fine fashion honoring a young man with a '55 Chevy of show quality which he drives to school every day. Our famous giant roll-around Waterloo Toolboxes were back for the season, and two were given away to a lucky drag racer and show entrant. A new prize this year is an XM satellite radio tuner provided by Pioneer to a lucky car show contestant. With all the new awards and prizes instituted for the '02 Super Chevy Show Season, there are even more reasons to come to an event than ever before.
As if the car show wasn't enough, the Nitro Coupes came to light up Pomona's famous quarter-mile. John Reynolds is our choice for "Ironman" after he survived a frightening explosion and fire on Sunday then was seen a few minutes later standing near the starting line watching the rest of the Nitro Coupes run. Like falling off a horse, best thing is to get right back on. The Nitro Coupe finals were postponed until the following weekend in Phoenix as the weather took a turn for "wet" late in the day and put a stop to the racing action.
Fresh from his induction into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame, AutoStar's Roger Gustin was thrilled with the record turnout of participants at Pomona and feels this might be one of the best Super Chevy Show Seasons ever. We have to agree.

The Classical Resurrection Camaro was an attention-getter all weekend. It is nearing completion and will soon be rolling, which is what this young fan is waiting for. |
Chuck and Barb Hawkins from Hollister, CA, brought their Gold Class '57 Bel Air convertible to wow the crowds. This cool Chevy has a dual-quad 270hp motor and a three-speed trans. |

That big-block just barely fits in Roger Owens' good-running '69 Camaro that he brought to race. Roger took an Editor's Choice Top Ten Drag Car home for his efforts. |
That steely eyed look of determination is what sets the racers apart from the also-rans. This Junior Dragster driver is definitely ready! |

Darwin Valentine of Buena Park, CA, shows his extra-clean '66 El Camino at several Super Chevy shows each year. This year he went home with an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car Award and his first ever class win. Congratulations! |
Super Chevy Show announcer Jerry Daisey (left) gets the lowdown on the Pioneer XM tuner. At every Sunday awards ceremony this season, Jerry gets to call the name of a lucky car show entrant and award one of these tuners as a prize. |

Rick Babweall of Chino Hills just completed his '67 Nova with a big-block. We awarded it an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car. |
This '69 Z/28 is raced by Chris Henderson from San Dimas, CA. We liked his DOT car so much we gave him an Editor's Choice Top Ten Drag Car award. |

Darryl Bowman of Trim Parts presents the Trim Parts Best Corvette award in association with Vette magazine to Bill and Karen Verboon of Hanford, CA, for their outstanding '62. Look for a feature on this solid-axle in the near future in Vette magazine. Darryl is doing his best to not look cold as an unseasonable front rolled into Pomona Sunday afternoon. |

John Reynolds spent all winter shaping up his Nitro Coupe. Unfortunately after winning his first round on Sunday, the engine exploded at the "big end" of the track causing John to demonstrate his evacuation technique (successfully we might add). The car came out looking like it fought a war, but a few minutes later "Ironman" Reynolds was trackside checking out the competition. Expect this team back soon. |
Toby Morin (left) is 21 and his pal, Nick Novak, is 18. They're a couple of racers up from the San Diego, CA, area. Toby's dad got him started on the '68 Camaro after dad used it as a daily driver. It now has a 427 small-block and has run a best of 10.94 at 123 mph with Toby at the hand controls. Nick's '69 Nova sports a monster 496-inch big-block and has run a best of 10.64 at 127 mph. These are just two of the young men and women we saw racing Super Chevys at Pomona. |
